Compression Springs
Compression springs are usually defined as open-coil helical springs that offer resistance to a compressive force applied axially. Helical compression springs are used to resist applied compression forces or to store energy in a push mode. Compression springs are the most common spring configuration and are utilized in a variety of industries. Most compression springs are straight cylindrical springs. But conical, barrel, hourglass or straight conical compression springs are also frequently seen and are required in a variety of situations. Torsion Springs
A torsion spring provides rotational energy or torque. There are single bodied and double bodied torsion springs. There must be three points of support and the body of a torsion spring usually sits on a shaft or arbor. Again, the design of the ends or legs of a torsion spring are limitless. The stress in a torsion spring is bending. Round wire is still the preferred material due to the cost of rectangular wire, even though rectangular is more efficient in bending.
Extension Springs
Extension springs exert a pulling force or energy. They are usually closely wound with initial tension and are mostly made from round wire. The design of the extension springs' ends are limitless – hooks, loops, bends, crossbars, etc.
